What is the PGI?
Created in 1992, the PGI is an official sign of quality across Europe. The designation identifies agricultural products and foodstuffs whose characteristics are closely linked to a geographical area, in which at least their production, processing or development takes place. For the consumer, it provides a guarantee of origin, quality but also flavours specific to the region.
Thus, the geographical area for the collection of milk, and the manufacture of metton and cancoillotte corresponds to the Franche-Comté region, and parts of the neighbouring departments (Ain, Saône-et-Loire, Côte d’Or , Haute-Marne, Vosges).
Since 20 May, 2022, the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Cancoillotte has been officially recognised by the European Union.
